Plzeň Region Regional Authority
Plzeň region is one of the 14 self-governing regions. This system of local government was implemented in the Czech Republic in 2000. The regions are self-governing i.e. they are not controlled by the state but by elected Regional Corporation. This gives more control and decision power to the members of the community. The region’s responsibility is regional development and caters for the needs of the community. It also protects public interests as stated in the laws and regulations.
The Region has a very similar structure to a municipality. In accordance with the Act n. 129/2000 Collection pertaining to regions the highest decision making body is the Regional Corporation. The Regional Corporation of the Plzen Region consists of 45 members (the number of members depends on the population). The Corporation members elect a Governor who represents the region and acts on its behalf. This position corresponds with the position of a mayor or a lord mayor of a municipality. The Corporation also elects a Regional Council (equal to a city council), that prepares regulations and so on to be decided by the Corporation and it has some decision making power as well. The Regional Council of the Plzen Region consists of 9 councillors (the number also depends on the population).
One of the bodies of a region is Regional Authority. It executes powers not held by the Corporation or a particular department. It performs tasks delegated to it by the Corporation and it helps with the operation of the departments and commissions. The Regional Authority‘s responsibilities are determined in the § 67 of the Act n.129/2000 Collection pertaining to regions. The head of the Regional Authority is a Director, the staff is divided into departments and sections. Plzen Regional Authority contains 17 departments.
